Prep first, tile second, no shortcuts in the middle

We started this the way most trade outfits start. One person who liked the work, a truck, and a wet saw. Tile pulled us in because it is one of the few things left in a house that you build once and then live with every day. You stand on it barefoot in the morning. You look at it while the coffee brews. A floor set well disappears into the house, and a floor set poorly nags at you for years. That is a good reason to be careful, and it is why we would rather turn down a job than rush one. Today we run a small crew out of Springfield and we keep it small on purpose. Small means the person who quotes your bathroom is on site while it happens. It means nobody hands your house off to a subcontractor you never met. When we say we will be there Tuesday, Tuesday is a real answer, not a placeholder we adjust later.

Our method comes down to doing the boring work first. Before a single tile goes up we check the substrate, the flatness, the slope, and the moisture. In an older Springfield house that usually means pulling a section of the floor to see what is under it. In a bathroom it means looking behind the tub surround and finding out whether anyone ever put a waterproof layer in. We measure the room in both directions and mark the layout on the floor before we mix anything. Then we set. Then we grout, once the mortar has actually cured, not the same afternoon because the schedule is tight. Every one of those steps has a right way to do it that the trade worked out a long time ago, and we follow that rather than making it up per job.

We also stay honest about scope. If your shower only needs a new pan and the walls are sound, we will tell you that instead of selling you the whole room. If we open a wall and find rot in the framing, we stop and show you a photo before we cover it up. Homeowners in Chatham, Rochester, and Sherman have all had us call midway through a demolition to say the job just got bigger, and we would rather have that awkward call than quietly build over a problem. Nobody enjoys hearing the number went up. Everybody prefers it to a wall that has to come apart again in two years. We go over changes with you so there is one version of the story, and we do not touch a change until you say go.

Communication is the part most people complain about with contractors, so we treat it as part of the job rather than an extra. You get a start date, a rough sense of how many days the room will be out of service, and a heads up when something moves. During the work you know who is in your house and roughly when they arrive. We keep the site clean because we have to work in it too, and because your kitchen is not a job trailer. Plastic goes up on doorways, a walk path gets taped down, and dust from cutting stays contained where we can help it. At the end the tools leave, the boxes leave, and the offcuts leave. What stays is the room, and we walk you through how to look after it for the first month.

The first call is short and it is free of pressure. Tell us the room, the problem, and roughly when you want it done. We ask a few questions that sound odd until you hear why. How old is the house. Does the floor feel springy near the tub. Is there a fan in the bathroom, and does it vent outside or into the attic. Has the grout been repaired before. Answers to those tell us more about what the job needs than any photo can. Then we come out, look at it in person, and put together a scope that covers demolition, prep, materials we supply, setting, grout, sealant, and cleanup. You will know what is included and what is not before anyone starts.

We are choosy about the work we take, and that helps you more than it sounds. We do tile and the rooms tile lives in. Showers, bathrooms, kitchen backsplashes, floors, mud rooms, fireplace surrounds, and full bathroom remodels where tile is the heart of the project. We do not chase every trade in the phone book, so we are not learning your job as we go. That focus is why we can look at a shower niche and know immediately how it should be sloped, or look at a floor and know whether it needs a membrane or another layer of board. Depth in one trade beats a long menu, and the difference shows up in corners, transitions, and the small cuts other crews rush.

The last thing is the reason people call us again for the next room. We finish the job. Punch lists get closed instead of carried. If a sealant line needs touching up after the room has been used a few weeks, call us and we will come look at it.
